Background of the Study
Local customs significantly influence how language is used pragmatically within Tiv communities in Benue State. These customs, which encompass social rituals, communal celebrations, and traditional conflict resolution practices, shape the ways in which Tiv speakers convey politeness, assertiveness, and respect (Uko, 2023). Pragmatic language use in these communities is characterized by specific speech patterns, indirect expressions, and culturally laden expressions that are rooted in local customs. For example, the use of proverbs and metaphorical language is prevalent in Tiv discourse, serving both as a means of communication and a tool for social cohesion. However, the rapid modernization and integration of global communication practices are beginning to alter these traditional pragmatic norms (Afon, 2024). This study investigates how local customs influence pragmatic language use among Tiv speakers, examining the impact of cultural continuity versus modern influences on everyday communication. Data will be collected through field observations, interviews, and discourse analysis, providing a comprehensive view of the interplay between tradition and modernity in Tiv linguistic practices.

Statement of the Problem
Modern influences and urbanization in Benue are challenging the traditional pragmatic language practices shaped by local customs among Tiv communities. As younger generations adopt more globalized communication styles, there is a risk that the culturally specific pragmatic markers—such as indirect speech and proverb usage—may erode (Uko, 2023). This erosion could lead to misunderstandings and a weakening of social bonds that are traditionally maintained through language. Limited research has explored the extent to which local customs continue to shape pragmatic language use in Tiv communities, highlighting the need for an investigation into these cultural dynamics (Afon, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document the influence of local customs on Tiv pragmatic language use.

  • To assess the impact of modernization on these practices.

  • To recommend strategies for preserving culturally specific pragmatic markers.

Research Questions

  • How do local customs shape pragmatic language use in Tiv communities?

  • What modern influences are altering these practices?

  • How can traditional pragmatic markers be preserved?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the interplay between local customs and pragmatic language use in Tiv communities, contributing to our understanding of cultural preservation in the face of modernization. The findings will benefit cultural custodians, educators, and linguists by offering strategies to sustain traditional communication practices (Uko, 2023; Afon, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Tiv communities in Benue and focuses solely on pragmatic language use influenced by local customs.

Definitions of Terms

  • Local Customs: Traditional practices and cultural norms.

  • Pragmatic Language Use: How language is used to achieve social functions.

  • Tiv Communities: Groups speaking the Tiv language in Benue State.
